The special feature of safari parks, which usually are considerably larger than zoos, is the opportunity for visitors to see wild animals up close while sitting on a bus or driving their own car, each at walking speed.
The heyday of safari and wildlife parks was in the 1960s and 1970s. Particularly in the US, and supported by popular animal shows on TV, there was a real rush on the just recently opened safari parks. As interest vained in the 80s, many had to close down however since the number of visitors couldn't be held.
