This year was rather disappointing for European roller coaster enthusiasts: Only 32 new entries were listed in the RCDB in 2012 – there hasn't been such a low number since 1999. Space constraints, issues with neighbours, the economic crises and losses in turnover due to bad weather certainly have their part to play in this. However, European amusement parks managed to present new surprising and impressive attractions in the past season.

Again and again the big players among the amusement parks create new thrilling roller coasters which all pass daring manoeuvres and therefore impress the guests by their size and speed, regardless if they are made of wood or steel, if flying or inverted, or if they rush through multiple loops. Some of these parks will be presented on Parkscout in random order. Smaller amusement parks situated in the land of unlimited possibilities are also included.

The smell of freshly roasted chestnuts is in the air while the taste of mulled wine, punch and pastries brings the Christmas spirit to the visitors. All over the roadsides huge snow heaps paint the streets white, children ice-skate on a large ice rink in a small forest glade, and a big band intones Christmas carols that everyone knows by heart. Fitting Germany's actual frosty temperatures and the first snow of this winter, the western German theme park Phantasialand invites to celebrate the festive season once again this year: “Wintertraum” - A winter's dream of a very special kind.

How does cultivating berries and creating one scream machine after the other go well together? It is quite simple, following the example of Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California. In the early 1920's, berry expert Walter Knott began selling his tasty fruits at a roadside stand along State Route 39. Being the first to cultivate boysenberries with commercial success in the 30's, Knott's business began to boom so that additionally, his wife opened a restaurant, selling chicken meals and self-made boysenberry cakes. Very soon visitors had to wait for a table at the restaurant – and the first entertainment programs arose.

The Belgian theme park Bellewaerde Park near the French boarder has quite something in store for its fans: In the upcoming season it will launch a new indoor coaster, replacing the ageing theme ride Los Pirates. Although this clone of “Pirates of the Caribbean” has been among the best of its kind, the dark ride's overall condition led to the conclusion that it has seen better days.

In 2001, Europa-Park was the first German amusement park that dared to open in winter, allowing 180,000 visitors to enjoy a contemplative, romantic Christmas spirit during the coldest season. This success led to subsequent extensions realised year after year. In the past winter season, roughly half a million people where heading down to the south of Germany to admire Europa-Park's winter wonderland which is unique in this form throughout Europe.
