Winter Efteling 2013/2014

Some are saying that the winter season is the best time to visit Efteling. The reason for this is less the range of attractions, one or another is closed due to the cold temperatures, than the truely fairytale-like winter finery in which the whole theme park is wrapped up in. First, there is no other park in Europe that understands that well to use the early darkness to provide such an atmospheric setting with thousands of twinkling lights; second, there are special winter attractions that create a wonderful feeling of being at home at last.

It is absolutely cosy to sit around a crackling campfire at sub-zero temperatures holding a mulled wine, and become misty eyed when listening to Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah” sung by heartwarming female voices of gifted gospel singers.

Does a winter season necessarily require Christmas commerce in order to make it as emotional as possible? Totally not – the largest theme park in the Netherlands impressively proves year after year by this particular season event that this is not needed at all!

Ice skating and skiing

Ice skating and cross-country skiing have been two of Winter Efteling's mainstream activities for years now. An indoor Ice Palace makes a Winter Wonderland come true thanks to a snow slide, a ski hut, the cross-country ski track "t Hijgend Hert", a festive Bavarian market with plenty of gastronomic delights, and an ice rink which is partly covered. The artificial snow and ice on top of the lamps and roofs make thirst for a hot Chocomel and festive sounds from the loudspeakeres all over the park make lots of hearts melt. Albeit Christmas is not being picked out as a theme, its spirit is everywhere in Winter Efteling.

Speaking of spirits: three attractions, in which grizzly spirits reside and change shape, take on a new form – for example, elaborate technology enables the abandoned madhouse Villa Volta to bursts into life. The windows open all of the sudden from out of nowhere, a couple of scary residents appear and the brickwork moves in an uncanny way. This optical illusion between projection and reality is a must-see – even though it bears no relation to the unique winter feeling. Moreover, there is another polished attraction: The Dutch fairytale musical "Klaas Vaak" performes its new Sandman show until 9th March (an additional fee is charged, tickes are to be reserved beforehand).

This year again, Winter Efteling is definitively worth visiting. Awarded in 2012 with the Parkscout Jury Award as the best amusement park in Europe, Efteling has quite something to offer in the coldest season with its spacious grounds, the enchantingly illuminated Fairytale Forest, the twinkling lights and the friendly staff. "Where Ravens will be Riders" – this is one slogan that underlines the fantasy theme which is, especially in winter, certainly not an empty shell.
