Tokyo DisneySEA, Part 2

Tokyo DisneySea
Astonishing themeing
More adventures can be found at the Lost River Delta in the South American jungle. Fans of thrill will find a real treasure here: Indiana Jones Adventure and the Crystal Skull is a mind-blowing dark ride of the newest generation full of suspense. The enormous Maya temple on the outside and the impressive designed queue sets this attraction apart from the Californian original, while the ride itself is very similar to the one in Disneyland Anaheim.

But this does not derogate the adventure in any part, because even in America the attraction is one of the most popular and spectacular ones. Besides the awesome themeing and several action packed special effects, the distinctive feature is the so-called Enhanced Motion Vehicle: A SUV featuring an integrated technique to simulate various movements on its drive through the dark temple. In this turbulent adventure guests feel like being part of a film. Not less exciting is the roller coaster Raging Spirits right next to the dark ride, which features – similar to the version in Disneyland Paris – a vertical looping. While this ride was designed by Intamin and manufactured by Giovanola for the European destination, the Tokyo version is build by the Japan firm Sansei Yusoki. Surprisingly, the differences in ride comfort could not be any clearer: Although the Paris' version is known for its rough characteristics and some vibrations in its curves, Raging Spirits is very smooth. That is the reason why the enormous scenic design gets greater attention while riding. Heaps of fire and fog are making this ride even more worth to ride in the evening hours and a great experience.

Aquatopia
The Port Discovery, a more futuristic themed area in the park, is just separated from the real sea by a sluice. In a big domed structure at the waterside Stormrider, the area's main attraction, is located. It is a wide-span simulator in which for scientific research a flight into the eye of a tornado is made. The funny thing about that is: The film actually starts and ends at Tokyo Disney Sea. Music and special effects are quite good, but unfortunately there is not much more striking in this ride. The trip is – despite of this ballyhoo and fuss – actually quite uninteresting or even boring, so to say. Aquatopia is a second attraction at Port Discovery without deeper meaning. Sitting in small, round boats, guests are driving over a lake. It seems like there is no regulation in navigating and the boats are also spinning around their own axis, so at least it makes fun to watch. This system was build for the first time here and afterwards used for the amazing Winnie the Pooh Ride in the neighbouring Tokyo Disneyland. Afterwards visitors can leave the weakest theme area of the park by DisneySEA Electric Railway.

This ride takes visitors to the American Waterfront, the biggest and one of the most astonishing parts of the park. Part of it is Cape Cod, a rather quiet and very maritime area, designed in the style of New England. The many shops and restaurants are whetting appetite for a stroll, while the lighthouse tower is keeping watch over the whole idyll. Meanwhile Duffy, Mickey Mouse's teddy bear, found a home here. The Japanese are going mad about this little and cute guy, so that his show and meet and greet are always very crowded.

Tower of Terror

Hotel with a drop ride

The second area at the American Waterfront is the harbour of New York City. It is really staggering, how detailed and costly the designer recreated the huge harbour with all its buildings and docks. Even ships are waiting in great numbers – the small steamers as well as sail boats. But they all get outshone by the SS Columbia, a giant transatlantic steamship in full-length. This ship, which reminds a little bit of the Titanic, houses two restaurants and the interactive attraction Turtle Talk with Crush. But it is also possible to simply climb on deck to enjoy the view over the real sea or over the American Waterfront. Just at the harbour bears a typical street of New York of the beginning of the last century, featuring various delicatessen and Scrooge McDuck's Department Store. In this street there is also the Broadway Musical Theatre, in which a Big Band Jazz Show with a 20 men strong Band and a lot of dancers is performed, including Daisy Duck as Jazz Bird, Marie the Cat on piano and Mickey Mouse on drums.

Enthroned over the streets of New York, the Hightower Hotel, the Japanese version of the Tower of Terror, is waiting. The ride itself is nearly identical to the one in Paris and Anaheim, but the setting and storyline are totally different. It sets new standards and is not referring to the American TV series "The Twillight Zone”. The building is decorated in such an artful way with so many details that it actually looks like a real luxury hotel from the 1900's. In the evening lightnings and thunder are regularly teasing , what happens within the building.

In the evening there is also the new show Fantasmic happening in the lagoon of the Mediterranean Harbor. Like in the eponymous show in America, Mickey is inviting the visitors to take a journey into his imagination, which is directed with the newest special effects and lots of fire, water, laser lights and fog in Tokyo DisneySEA. It is a perfect ending of a day out in one of the most beautiful amusement parks in the world.
