Roller coasters: Who's got the most?

Bayern Park

'The only statistics you can trust are those you falsified yourself'. This principle still holds true. However, we all surely agree that playing with numbers is somehow interesting – also and especially when it comes to roller coasters. Perhaps some inclined readers are surprised by one result or another.

If one takes a brief look at Germany wondering in which federal state most roller coasters are situated, the answer may certainly cause amazement. Contrary to the assumptions of many, it is not Baden-Württemberg, home of the country's largest amusement park, neither the most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia that has to be content with third place. Bavaria with 26 coasters has barely made it onto the top step of the podium. Of course, this result says little about the quality, but in terms of quantity Bavaria is leading – considering that Europa-Park, located in the neighbouring state, has eleven coasters. Brandenburg, Thuringia, and Saarland are particularly ill-equipped – it is impossible to find more than a single steel beast in each of these states.

There is a total of 135 roller coasters in Germany. Even though this number is quite a lot, the country of poets and thinkers only suffices for the second place by European comparison. The lucky winners are Great Britain's amusement parks that feature an impressive number of 169 roller coasters. France, with 93 of these gut-wrenching attractions, is ranked on the third place of the European winner's podium. Unfortunately, those who live in Lithuania, Albania, Croatia, or Bulgaria don't have as much of a choice: each country has one roller coaster.

Throughout the world – and this is not really surprising – Asian amusement parks are ahead of the game: 1,168 coasters are currently operating in Asia. It is to be expected that this impressive number will increase tremendously considering the projects that are supposed to be realised in future. Interestingly enough, North America is placed third, not second, although the media often reports on thrilling machines from abroad. In fact, the silver medal goes to Europe with its 777 roller coasters, offering 30 more than the USA and Canada. Australia ranks last counting 25 in total, therewith, it offers less coasters than Bavaria. And thus we come back to the German federal states ...
