New Water Park at Gran Canaria?

One of the most popular European vacation destinations are the Canary Islands located in the Atlantic Ocean. Without any doubt people are impressed by its amazing natural landscapes, but the lack of leisure facilities had been obvious for years.

In 1972 German businessman Wolfgang Kiessling opened Loro Parque at northern Tenerife. Today the big zoo is one of the island's most important attractions. In 2008 the Kiessling family launched Siam Park in the south of Tenerife, a great water park with incredible theming and a scale of detail visitors have never seen in Europe before. Now the successful story will likely continue – at Gran Canaria.

The greatest water park of Europe is planned on a 300,000 sqm area at the city limit of Playa del Ingles. The still undeveloped piece of land can easily be reached by bus or by car. There are even concepts for a train connection from Maspalomas to Las Palmas. So the infrastructure ist perfect for Kiessling's planning, and his idea is supported by the island's government expecting an increasing number of tourists.

The Kiessling family wants to invest around one billion Euro for their expansion at Gran Canaria. The new water park should match Siam Park but with a larger area and even more theming of the attractions, 200 new jobs can be expected. So the Canary Islands will likely get another park of global standards, even though the rumoured investment amount seems a little high. If a waterpark at Gran Canaria can be as successful as Loro Parque and Siam Park at Tenerife remains to be seen …
