Kings Island

The USA: for many people a real coaster-heaven. Again and again the big players among the amusement parks create new thrilling roller coasters which all pass daring manoeuvres and therefore impress the guests by their size and speed, regardless if they are made of wood or steel, if flying or inverted, or if they rush through multiple loops. Some of these parks will be presented on Parkscout in random order. Smaller amusement parks situated in the land of unlimited possibilities are also included. Today, we will be focussing on Kings Island.

Overview over the park
Kings Island in Ohio has aroused popularity through many film productions. The icon of the park is a reproduction of Paris' Eiffel Tower, which was build in 1972 right in the entrance area. It's a construction of 450 tons of steel, reaching a height of 96 metres and offering a great view over the park from an observation deck. Especially coaster enthusiasts are visiting the park, because today it offers 13 partly very spectacular roller coasters. A true legend is "Beast”, a wooden coaster operating since 1979 and record holder for more than 30 years. With a total length of 2.2 kilometres and a layout completely winding through a forest, it still is a real classic among the woodies and ever will be.

In 2000 the park wanted to top the existing coaster off by adding "Son of the Beast”, but the result was not that satisfying. As a first wooden roller coaster ever, "Son of the Beast” featured a looping which, however, was nearly impossible to enjoy. Riders complained about a pain in their back, so that the inversion was removed in the end. But the rest of the layout also was more like a torture than anything else – even for coaster fans. After numerous and ongoing modifications the park management finally decided the close the coaster for good in 2012 and began to destruct it.

A very felicitous and nicely themed coaster is the "Backlot Stunt Coaster”. With its two launches, a dark ride part and an action scene it brings lots of fun to ride with this family friendly coaster. Similar to "Beast”, the 70 metres high Mega Coaster "Diamondback” is winding its way in an out and back layout through a forested area. And there are more very different coasters: "Flight of Fear” is an indoor coaster, "Firehawk” is a flying one, and "Flight Deck” is an inverted coaster. In the rear parts of the park the "WindSeeker” takes guests to a flight in the sky and additionally provides a chance to get an overview over the park. But there is more to explore, because the area is quite large and home to a great number of flat rides, water rides and a big water park.
