Kings Dominion

The USA: for many people a real coaster-heaven. Again and again the big players among the amusement parks create new thrilling roller coasters which all pass daring manoeuvres and therefore impress the guests by their size and speed, regardless if they are made of wood or steel, if flying or inverted, or if they rush through multiple loops. Some of these parks will be presented on Parkscout in random order. Smaller amusement parks situated in the land of unlimited possibilities are also included.

Intimidator 305 - are you rough enough?
Kings Dominion in Virginia reveals structural commonalities with its sister park Kings Island in Ohio. Concepts and rides that have already gained popularity among most visitors to Kings Island were created in Kings Dominion one to one – like a blueprint. The park inaugurated in 1975 offering fifteen attractions back then. It now offers a variety of coasters, 14 in total, some of them are indeed thrilling. Opened in 1998, the launched coaster Volcano, The Blast Coaster keeps enjoying a legendary reputation. Its layout themed appropriately inside and around a volcano is very well made. Compared to Kings Island, the area is a bit smaller and there is no water park to be found. However, Kings Dominion provides water attractions in the main area. Kings Island is surrounded by a dense forest, whereas Kings Dominion scores with several green area between its attractions.

The park's highlight surely is the high speed roller coaster Intimidator 305. Shortly after its opening, it hit the headlines because most rides were briefly blacking out when rushing through a turn near the ground after the first drop. Although the manufacturer did build an awesome coaster with extreme power and outstanding ride characteristics, it simply was too fierce. During the following off-season, the speed was reduced and the radius of the high speed turn was widened to reduce friction and impact on riders – but still, Intimidator 305 is too boisterous for some visitors. However, the reconstruction was disappointing for thrill seekers since they considered the original as a superlative coaster, one found at last! Irrespective of any opinion about Intimidator 305, this roller coaster will remain being controversial.
