European amusement parks in winter

Peak season visitors often have to expect long waiting queues at the attractions. Fortunately, there are by now more and more parks that open during the cold season of the year attracting with special Christmas decorations and mull wine in snowy landscapes. The decrease in rush is not the sole advantage compared to the hot summer months – particularly in the winter's dark evening hours, amusement parks frequently exude a particular fascination.

Germany's most visited amusement parks, Europa-Park in the south and Phantasialand in the west, are as festive as usual when opening the winter season this year again. They provide numerous specials such as Christmas shows, luge runs or a seasonal gastronomic offer. Some Dutch amusement parks entice visitors to spend an excellent winter day, too. This naturally includes the largest theme park in the Netherlands Efteling with its wintry landscapes where visitors can take long walks along numerous unclosed attractions. Toverland, located near the Dutch-German border, is another popular year-round destination and welcome alternative to classical Christmas markets – regrettably, only the first hall is open during the cold season; the wooden coaster "Troy" additionally opens during the school holiday period.

Disneyland Resort Paris' Christmas season has been an integral part of the European amusement park specials for a long time now. The whole resort transforms into a winter wonderland filled with an all-American Christmas spirit in the central area of the world's second-smallest continent (by surface). The exciting season ends in January. There is no stopping in Europe's sun-kissed southern regions either: both Gardaland in Italy and PortAventura in Spain contribute to the special festive Christmas spirit with a Mediterranean touch. Those preferring to enjoy this special season in the north, may look forward to the traditional winter opening at Tivoli Gardens that celebrates one of the best events of this kind in Europe.
