Inaugurated in 1844 by Friedrich Wilhelm IV, Zoo Berlin was the first animal park of its kind in Germany. Today, in Zoologischer Garten Berlin you'll experience a mixture of a beautifully designed park landscape, historical stables and modern facilities according to the latest standards. Housing 1,500 different animal species makes Zoo Berlin the zoo with the most species worldwide. By breeding endangered species, the zoo supports wildlife conservation. Polar bear Knut, born in 2006, in very short time has grown into an icon with a reputation far beyond Berlin and Germany.

Living in Berlin, the zoo always is a great place to have a time out from all the trouble surrounding. Just by entering the park's area, you forget that you are right in the heart of one of the biggest cities in Europe.

I like watching the animals here and relax. The new enclosures are designed widely and freely. I hope that older ones will get a rehab soon as well. My favorite are the penguins.

One of the probably most known pictures of the park is the Chinese themed entrance gate on one side of the area. Famous – especially in Germany – got with the birth of polar bear “Knut” several years ago.

Berlin Zoo
It was our last day in Berlin and we went to the zoo. It is a lovely zoo but you can definately tell which are the old enclosures and which are the newer ones. We felt that the big cat enclosures are quite small compared to some of the other animals, this is probably as they are the older enclosures.
