Apenheul came into existence in 1971 as a small but at its time revolutionary zoo. That's because Apenheul was the first zoo worldwide to keep monkeys without enclosures or fences but free-roaming. In the year of 1976 the first gorillas came into the park and from then on Apenheul was renowned beyond the borders of Netherlands for its exemplary keeping of apes and monkeys of all kinds. Added to the zoo has been the nature park Berg den Bos – a true oasis for walkers and nature lovers.
